UNESCO Recognition of Italian Cuisine as Intangible Cultural Heritage
Italian cuisine has been officially recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, confirming its role as one of the most influential and enduring food cultures in the world.
This recognition does not refer to a single dish or recipe. Instead, it acknowledges Italian cuisine as a living cultural expression, shaped by shared practices, regional knowledge and the transmission of skills across generations.
Italian Cuisine as a Living Cultural System
UNESCO’s designation frames Italian cuisine as a complex cultural system, rooted in history, geography and everyday life. Seasonal cooking, regional specialities and the ritual of shared meals are central elements of how food is experienced and understood in Italy.
What defines Italian cuisine is not only flavour, but the relationship between people, place and practice. This balance of craftsmanship, conviviality and respect for origin continues to give Italian food strong cultural and global relevance.
Global Relevance Beyond National Borders
Italian food has long held a prominent position in international markets. UNESCO’s recognition reinforces a principle widely shared by consumers and professionals alike: authenticity and provenance are essential.
Every Italian product carries with it a narrative of origin, production and cultural context. The UNESCO designation formally recognises this dimension, placing cultural value alongside quality, taste and reliability.
Implications for Vitto and International Retail Partners
For Vitto, this recognition reflects how Italian food performs across international retail environments.
Italian products consistently appeal to consumers not only for familiarity and taste, but for the credibility and tradition embedded in their origins. UNESCO’s recognition strengthens these attributes, providing additional context to categories that demonstrate stable, long-term demand.
For buyers, it highlights Italian food as a culturally anchored category rather than a short-term trend. Clear communication of origin, authenticity and production values can support shopper trust and meaningful differentiation on shelf.
At Vitto, we work to connect Italian producers with retail partners worldwide, selecting products that combine heritage with everyday relevance. Our focus is on foods that respect traditional practices while meeting contemporary expectations around quality, accessibility and value.
The enduring strength of Italian cuisine lies in its ability to unite cultural depth with commercial consistency, speaking clearly to both professionals and consumers.
A Cultural Milestone Worth Noting
This recognition goes beyond culinary prestige. It underscores the role of food in shaping social connection, shared experiences and daily life.
Italian cuisine has long represented a way of gathering, sharing and valuing the table. UNESCO’s recognition marks an important milestone, formally acknowledging a tradition that has been lived, transmitted and appreciated across generations.
Complimenti, Italia.

If you were at Stand A26, you probably saw (and smelled!) the action. We were busy serving up steaming pots of pasta smothered in two of our signature sauces: Arrabbiata Sauce (for those who enjoy a little bit of a spicy kick 🌶️) and our classic Tomato & Basil Sauce (a crowd-pleasing hug in a jar 🍅✨).
Beyond the pasta, we were excited to introduce Vitto to new faces and share our values:
